Taking the Mystery Out of Open Channel Flow is the title of an article written by Walt Boyes for FlowControl Network.  Referring back to part one of this two part article Boyes opens with the question, "So, what happens if either you cannot put in a primary device, or you have a flooding problem or a reverse flow?"  This is a question faced by many in the industry and one which Boyes addresses with a brief history of the subject.  From 19th century Robert Manning through the advent of area/velocity flowmeters for open channels he explains how technological advances have given users many more (useful) options in measuring open channel flow. 

Boyes does a nice job reminding those of us in the flow monitoring industry how we got here.  A reference and quick explanation of the Auburn Point Velocity Equation may bring back fond memories of times gone by for many readers.

This is not just a history lesson however, and the author quickly discusses more recent technological advances including the Marsh-McBirney Flo-Dar flowmeter.   This breakthrough technology allows the user to measure both velocity and depth without making contact with the fluid.  As the article points out, "Results of independent testing show remarkable accuracy for this device when it is installed properly."
