URS Counts on the Hach FH950 for Wastewater Applications

Determine optimum locations for open channel sewer flow meter sensor installations, as well as provide redundant accuracy verification of installed meters.

For over 50 years, the URS Corporation’s Cleveland, Ohio location has provided architectural and engineering services to their customers throughout the United States. Their Wastewater flow monitoring services are performed by their Water Resources Division.

On a regular basis, URS Water Resources personnel perform open channel flow meter installations and redundant accuracy verification of installed flow meters for their municipal and industrial customers. Determining the optimum locations for sensor installation and flow sensor accuracy verification can be both difficult and time consuming processes.

Many flow meter installers utilize a hand-held flow meter as a tool to save time and labor resources on-site. Such is the case with William Kasberg of URS Corporation. Kasberg has been in the flow business for over 25 years, with the last 13 years of service spent with URS as a Field Supervisor in the Water Resources Group. Kasberg counts on the Hach FH950 Handheld Flow Meter while working in the field. He says, “We have been using the FH950 for about a year. Prior to using this meter we were using the Marsh-McBirney Model 2000 for site work.” The meter was purchased through their local Hach Flow rep, Tim Carrig with Carrig Associates.

The FH950 handheld meter was introduced several years ago as a replacement meter for the Model 2000, also known as the FLO-MATE. The uniqueness of the FH950 is its ability to measure depth as well as velocity to calculate flow. The lightweight, water-resistant meter was designed for the rugged sewer environment. With an innovative and compact sensor shape (no moving parts) with intelligently-designed flow characteristics, the FH950 Handheld Flow Meter delivers reliable measurements at low velocities, in very shallow water, and in turbulent flow conditions. Kasberg comments, “The .2, .4, .8 profiling mode is a very handy feature in order to know how deep you are in the water to keep it at a good, constant level. It’s an excellent feature. Overall I like the meter very much.”
