July 31st. Getting this month's newsletter out just under the wire. I'm blaming it on summer in general and on vacation in particular. Longtime readers of Focus On Flow know that my family and I vacation on the Outer Banks of North Carolina every summer. This year's vacation ended two days ago. Distractions.

I grew up in Maryland and have been enjoying summer beach vacations my whole life. I live in the Kansas City area now and many of my neighbors don't fully appreciate what the ocean offers that Midwest lakes simply cannot. In a word, Surprises. This year was no exception. On our last full day at the beach we were surprised to find large amounts of unbroken shells, live starfish, and large clusters of mussels in the surf zone (photos). This made for many hours of foraging for souvenir shells. At some point it occurred to me that the mussels (still alive and clinging to nylon fishing lines) could make for a tasty meal. I looked for the biggest ones I could find and started collecting them in a bucket. When I explained my intentions to anyone that asked the typical reply was something like, "You're crazy" or "See you in the hospital". I would not be swayed. I'm a pretty adventurous eater to begin with but my confidence was due largely to my involvement in the industry that helps keep our coastal waters clean. Long story short - I steamed them in white wine, garlic and onions and lived to write about it (thank you North Carolina sewer professionals!).

I hope you're enjoying summer too. I'm back to work and you know how to reach me.

Best regards,
