Several years ago a long-time sewer flow veteran approached me at the WEF Collection Systems Conference and asked if I was interested in hearing how a Marsh-McBirney Flo-Tote "saved his life". Of course I would...
His story took place in the late-80's and his company was under contract to perform sewer flow monitoring in a relatively remote catchment basin. Now, there were plenty of safety regulations on the books at the time but those of us that have been around for a couple of decades or more know that both practice and enforcement used to be pretty spotty. So it was that he drove out alone to retrieve Flo-Tote data from a sewer manhole. Safety wasn't a primary concern you see, as the manhole was shallow and he could easily reach the flow meter without actually making a full confined space entry. It's worth pointing out here that my friend was not a small man and he carried more than his share of weight around the midsection. So, reaching into the manhole he loses his balance and finds himself not only sliding head first into the abyss, but worse - he is stopped by his waist filling the circumference of the manhole entrance like a cork. My friend was alone, in the middle of nowhere, dangling with his feet in the air and his hands just out of reach of the manhole bench. Scary stuff. Not panicking he quickly realized that the Flo-Tote's strong cylindrical housing was his only hope. He was just able to reach the flow meter handle and use the Flo-Tote to push himself out to safety.
A happy ending to be sure but one that should never have been necessary in the first place. We've come a long way since then. Not only are safety guidelines followed more closely there are also far fewer reasons to be at or near a manhole in the first place. Hach's Flo-Dar
has nearly eliminated in-situ sensor cleaning and our remote web-based data systems
mean your data comes to you, not the other way around.
