33Beautiful early autumn weekend here in Kansas City. When this kind of weather arrives my wife and I try to get out and enjoy a lunch or dinner at a restaurant with patio seating. Blue skies, crisp air, only one problem. Sewage. Or rather the smell of sewage. Even though I've spent most of my career measuring the stuff, the smell of it while dining can still ruin a meal. You see, Kansas City has a sewer problem. Combined sewers specifically. Most of these sewers are downtown where urban wannabe's like me prefer to hang out. These combined sewers are major contributors to the reportedly annual 7 billion gallons of raw sewage discharged into local streams and rivers. Like many cities before it, Kansas City is now part of a consent decree, agreeing to make extensive improvements to its sewer systems at a cost estimated to exceed $2.5 billion over 25 years. Another reminder that there remains a lot of work to be done in maintaining and improving America's aging infrastructure.

That of course is a perfect segue to a reminder about next month's WEFTEC - the Water Environment Federation's annual technical exhibition and conference. 17,000 attendees. Over 1,000 exhibiting companies. I love this show. This year's venue is Chicago and should be the biggest ever. Make sure you take a few minutes and drop by the Hach Flow Booth #1626 and say hi. We will be showcasing state-of-the-art solutions to whatever sewer flow monitoring challenges you are currently facing. In my opinion no other company can offer you the variety of proven solutions that Hach Flow can. Whether you are a DIY-type that manages your own fleet of flow monitors or part of the growing number of cities that want Hach Data Delivery Services to provide a turnkey solution (or maybe you want to do a little of both?), you'll be glad you stopped by.

See you there!

Sincerely,

6
